Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. In her early years, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner so that they could remain alive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school there. The school she attended after only two years in order to pursue the profession of acting. This was not an easy path to follow. Although she got an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine, no theatre jobs came her way. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. There she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
